“The children snorkelled for the entire afternoon”
We hired the boat for a full day with two children, eight and eleven, and I had braced myself for the usual are-we-there-yet routine. The masks came out at the first stop and that was the last we heard from them. Plenty of shade at the back for the two of us, which in August matters more than you would think.

“Giuseppe stayed out an extra half hour for the sunset”
Ten years of marriage and one evening without the children. Giuseppe understood what we were after without us having to explain it. He cut the engine, let us swim off the back and stayed out an extra half hour because the light was still good. My English is far from perfect and he moved between three languages without blinking. A genuinely kind man.

Organizzare qualcosa per otto ragazze è un'impresa e ci siamo mosse tardissimo. Giuseppe ha risposto su WhatsApp in pochi minuti, ha sistemato tutto in due giorni e non ci ha mai fatto pesare di essere state complicate. Professionale dall'inizio alla fine e con una pazienza che meriterebbe un monumento.

“Flat water and rare thoughtfulness about seasickness”
I get seasick on anything smaller than a ferry, so I spent the first ten minutes quietly planning my excuses. Never needed them. Flat water the whole way to Capo Gallo, and they had ginger biscuits on board just in case, which I thought was a lovely touch.

“Giuseppe's endless patience with our two teenagers”
Two teenagers who had decided in advance that they were going to be bored. Giuseppe let them take the wheel one at a time, explained where we were heading and why, and by the end they were the ones asking him questions about the reserve. He also saw the wind changing and moved us round the headland before we had noticed anything at all. Serious about safety without making a performance of it.

Booked it for my wife's fortieth and mentioned in one email that it was a surprise. There was prosecco on ice and her kind of music playing when we stepped aboard. Still don't know how they managed the playlist. She cried a little. Job done.

I brought my parents, both in their seventies, and I'd been quietly worried about getting my dad on and off the boat. Nobody made a thing of it, they just put a hand out at the right moment and carried on. My mother swam in the sea for the first time in about fifteen years. I sat there watching her and got a bit emotional, honestly. Thank you.

“No hidden costs and real care for someone who cannot swim”
One of our group can't swim and had been quietly dreading the whole day. Giuseppe found her a float, kept the ladder down and stayed near her in the water at the first stop until she relaxed. Small thing, but it made her holiday. The price we were quoted was also the price we paid, fuel included, which had not been our experience elsewhere on that trip.

Six friends and we can be a lot. Nobody rushed us, nobody checked their watch when we stayed in the water far too long. The sunset aperitivo was better than the restaurant we'd booked for that evening, which we ended up cancelling.

We booked the sunset trip on our second evening and spent the rest of the week telling other people at the hotel to do the same. Cold drinks, a swim off the rocks while the light went, then the whole city turning orange behind us on the way back in. Go early in your stay so you have time to go twice.

“The skipper knows every inch of this coast by heart”
A few notes for anyone still deciding. Bring a hat, there's shade but you'll want one anyway. Take the four hour option over the short one, the extra swim stop is where it gets good. And ask about Capo Gallo, we nearly skipped it and it turned out to be the best part of the day. Boat was spotless and the skipper actually knows the coast instead of reading off a script.
